Welcome to the MD Plus/Leaders in Medicine Program

The MD Plus Option

Our Faculty has developed an integrated training program to meet the challenge of providing clinically trained scientists who will be essential for expanding the health care enterprise in Canada over the coming years.  In this program, medical training can be combined with degree programs in a variety of other disciplines.

Our program differs from the MD Plus Programs that other North American medical schools have developed.  We offer combined opportunities in disciplines ranging from Philosophy and Bioethics to Business Administration, in addition to the more traditional training in the Biological Sciences.  The program is entitled ‘MD Plus/Leaders in Medicine’ to indicate our intention to train individuals in many disciplines related to Medicine, and to provide leadership in a variety of facets of our future health care system.

Program Flexibility

The hallmark of our program is flexibility.  The University of Calgary's Faculty of Medicine provides a unique three-year medical training program, including substantial student-directed independent study time.  There are many options available for students to design an individualized course of study to meet their own needs.  However, students are required to complete the 18-month period of MD training as a single block (see the Systems Course Program).
